My PhD project is about the role of trust dynamics in transforming agricultural practices in Europe to incorporate sustainable values. In doing so, it aims to contribute to the process of making European food production more sustainable. Such a process of change requires redesigning practices and underlying systems. This brings along high levels of uncertainty about both problem definitions and solutions. By departing from usual types of solutions, actors end up in unusual coalitions. In such coalitions, actors are often unfamiliar with each other’s work culture, habits, preferences and communication styles- which can create difficulties in the collaboration process. In order to cope with the combination of high levels of uncertainty and the unfamiliarity between actors in collaborative settings, trust is seen as an important prerequisite. In this research project, the intertwined processes of trust building and collaborative problem solving will therefore be investigated.
