H.I. (Hester) Mennes
In my research, I examine governance aspects of schools’ provision of democratic education in the Netherlands. Increasingly, research insights are available on how schools can contribute to young citizens’ equipment to navigate through democracy. However, less is known about what supports schools in realizing such a contribution. I therefore build on these previous insights and focus on governance factors that shape schools’ provision of democratic education. Given concerns about rising inequalities in educational opportunities, I pay particular attention to social inequalities in students’ access to and gains from schools’ provision of democratic education. I rely mainly on large scale data from the Dutch and broader European context, using quantitative research methods. I am a member of the research team in the Adolescentenpanel Democratische Kernwaarden en Schoolloopbanen (ADKS) project (https://adks.nl/). As member of the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (AMCIS), I organize seminars themed Citizenship & Education (firstname.lastname@example.org). I.a., I co-teach the course Economics of Lifelong Learning.
