  • Profile

Judith Möller is an Associate Professor for Political Communication at the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Political Science at the University of Trondheim. She is affiliated with the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), the Center for Politics and Communication (CPC), and the Information, Communication, & the Data Society Initiative (ICDS).

In her research, she focuses on the effects of political communication, in particular, social media and digital media. She is fascinated by the complex relationship between expressions of citizenship and communication characterized by intertwined causal links and conditioned by the political system. In particular, there are two foci her research: (1)  the impact of tailored political communication on the individual user and society at large and (2) the role of (new) media in the process of attitude formation, specifically as part of the political socialization processes.

In 2019 she was awarded a VENI talent track grant by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO). The project is entitled "Vocal, Visible and Vaulting? (Dis)connected niche audiences in the age of artificial intelligence" and studies the impact of algorithmic filter systems and artificial intelligence on specific segments of the population and niche audiences (fringe bubbles). She is the recipient of the Baschwitz Article of the Year Award in 2018 and a fellow of the algorithmed public sphere network at the Hans-Bredow-Institute in Hamburg, Germany (2017). She is co-founder of the research group on AI and conversational agents at the UvA and part of a research team that successfully applied for a four year E-Science/NWO Data science grant (“Inside the filter bubble”) that aims to link substantive research with methods in computer linguistics to identify biases in frames and perspectives in individual news diets.

Her work has been published in international peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Social Science Computer Review, Information, Communication, and Society, The International Journal of Press/Politics, American Behavioral Scientist, European Journal of Communication, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journal of European Public Policy, Digital Journalism and Politics and Governance (Google Scholar Profile). She serves as an editorial board member of Journal of Communication and ad-hoc reviewer for many leading journals in the field (Publons Profile).

It is important to her, that her research reaches a broader public. She regularly participates in public debates or science festivals, for example, the Betweterfestival, Bessensap, One World Media café, or Tegenlicht Meet-up in Pakhuis de Zwijger. She is also in frequent dialogue with news publishers, public broadcasters and media regulators. She was commissioned to write an extended report for the Commissariaat van de Media about exposure diversity and algorithmic news recommendation that was later shared with the Dutch Parliament with Natali Helberger. Moreover, she is regularly invited as an expert to meetings of media regulators and consumer and market authorities such as The European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA) , European Platform of Regulatory Authorities (EPRA), Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb), Landesanstalt für Medien NRW, Eidgenössische Medienkommission (EMEK) or Election Observation and Democracy Support (EODS). She is also member of a proof of concept project (PI: Natali Helberger) that successfully applied for funding of the SIDN fonds to develop a diversity assessment toolkit in the context of news.
