    Background and fields of interest

    Miriam van Rijsingen studied Art History, Philosophy and Film and Theater Studies at Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, and graduated with a thesis on Eva Hesse and French Philosophy in 1984. She was appointed at the University of Amsterdam in 1985 as a specialist in Feminist Art History in the inter-department for Feminist Studies in the Humanities (untill 1992) as well as the Department of Art History. She received her PhD in 1999 with her dissertation Melancholische spiegels - Voorstellingen van gebrek en verlangen, vrouwelijkheid en kunstenaarschap in het werk van Anselm Feuerbach.  Since then she developed several specialities, notabaly in the field of Contemporary Art and Art&Science.

    Miriam is a specialist in Feminist Art History, Historiography and Art Theory, Art&Science,                Representation(al) Theory, Spectatorship and Phenomenology, Representation of the Body, Contemporary Artistic Strategies and New Media.

  • research projects

    NWO Research Program

    Miriam van Rijsingen was co-applicant and co-coordinator of the NWO research program New Representattional Spaces: Investigations into the interactions between and intersections of arts and genomics. The program ran from 2004 untill 2009 and consisted of two PhD projects, one senior project and a dissiminaton project which developed into The Arts & Genomics Center. It was a joint program of the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University.  

    As the senior researcher she developed the synthesizing project Signification and Experiment in Art and Genomics (now reworked into Art and Bioscience). Currently the results of this research are reworked into a book with the working title: What is the Matter in ArtScience?
