  • Research Interests

Dr. Anna-Esther Younes is researching and teaching critical theories of race (and racism) through the prism of psychoanalytic and post-/colonial theories. She received her PhD entitled “Race, Colonialism and the Figure of the Jew in a New Germany” from IHEID (Geneva, CH), in 2016, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Riccardo Bocco and with Prof. Dr. Judith Butler as external reader.

Younes defines her work through the (anthropological) concept of “researching home” and “researching up to power” and is currently a Post-Doc at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Netherlands.

In 2016, Anna-Esther Younes was one of the two main curators of the first month-long, international, and interdisciplinary Palestinian Arts Festival that took place in Berlin and has maintained an interest in the arts and political curation.

She has been active in anti-racist grassroots networks in Berlin and beyond for more than two decades. Since 2019, she also serves as a lay judge at Berlin’s youth court (Younes role was allocated to the district of Neukoelln).

  • Pedagogy

At the study abroad program of Northeastern University (Boston, USA) in Berlin, Younes is passionate to continue teaching Critical Race Theories and Cultural Studies. Her main focus is to continuously engage in forms of ‘democratic classrooms’-pedagogy in dialogue with her students. She hopes to combine the same "critical thinking" that is taught with a "practice of learning and teaching". Given the successful feedback of students so far, Younes continues teaching the undergraduate class on "Race, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture" at the Northeastern Uni program at CIEE in Berlin.
