Prof. dr. Carla Zoethout is hoogleraar Constitutioneel recht aan de Faculteit Rechtswetenschappen van de Open Universiteit en voorzitter van de  sectie Staatsrecht en Encylopedie van de rechtswetenschap. Tot september 2023 was zij tevens als universitair hoofddocent Staatsrecht verbonden aan de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van de UvA en verzorgde zij onder meer het vak Comparative Constitutional Law bij het  PPLE College (Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics):

Eerder was zij werkzaam bij de vakgroep Encyclopedie van de Rechtswetenschap aan de Universiteit Leiden en bij de afdeling Staats- en bestuursrecht van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, waar zij in 1995 promoveerde op het proefschrift getiteld Constitutionalisme. Een vergelijkend onderzoek naar het beperken van overheidsmacht door het recht (Gouda Quint, Arnhem). Van 2001 tot 2004 werkte zij bij de afdeling Staatsrecht van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

Carla Zoethout maakte deel uit van Nationale Conventie ter voorbereiding van een nieuwe Grondwet (2006) en van de redactie van de Oordelenbundel Gelijke Behandeling. Tevens was zij mede-oprichter en redactielid van het Tijdschrift voor Religie, Recht en Bestuur (Boom Juridische Uitgevers). Carla Zoethout was jurylid van de Ius Commune Prize  en lid van de redactieraad van het debatcentrum van de Universiteit van Amsterdam, Spui25. Zij is lid van de redactieraad van het Tijdschrift voor Bestuurswetenschappen en Publiekrecht.

Carla Zoethout Professor of Constitutional Law at the Open Universiteit, the Netherlands. She is chair of the Section of Constitutional law and Jurisprudence. Until september 2023 she was also associate professor of Constitutional Law at the UvA.

Previously she was lecturer at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University. Her main topics of interest are: comparative constitutional law, human rights (in particular the freedom of religion) and (the role of the) European Court of Human Rights.
