Exchange Programme in Law

Are you looking for an opportunity to study law as an exchange student at one of the most renowned law schools in Europe? The Amsterdam Law School of the University of Amsterdam has a long-standing tradition of offering English-taught programmes in law. The Law School has a strong international focus, with various Master programmes in the field of international and European law. Exchange students are allowed to choose their courses from a broad selection of English-taught courses within these LLM programmes. In addition, several English-taught courses are available at bachelor-level.

1. Renowned Law School: The Amsterdam Law School has an excellent reputation for its high quality of teaching and research. It is one of the top European Law Schools in the Times Higher Education University Rankings by subject and ranks 3rd of the continental European Law Schools.
2. Top staff: Classes are taught by top researchers and practitioners who have worked at EU institutions, international tribunals, the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and other public institutions or top law firms.
3. Broad selection of courses: A broad selection of English-taught law courses taught are open to Exchange students. The Master Programmes Public International Law, International Trade and Investment Law, European Union Law, European Competition Law, and European Private Law all have a large selection of elective courses that are also open to Exchange students. Many of the courses will be taught in a seminar-type setting, next to larger lectures, allowing an intensive exchange of views and debate in class.
4. International classroom: Both students and lecturers come from all over the world, creating a true international classroom experience also for our Exchange students. Around 60 to 80% of students in most classes will have an international background. 
5. Research-based teaching: Courses are often taught often by leading researchers in the field who incorporate their own research in teaching where possible. The vibrant research communities of the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) and the Amsterdam Center for European Law and Governance (ACELG) organize events that are also open to the student population.
6. Amsterdam: The Law School is centrally located in Amsterdam, a city with a high standard of living, and a vibrant student life. The city is renowned for its tolerant, open and multicultural character, foreign students can easily participate in the rich cultural and social life as English is widely spoken. Amsterdam was ranked 11th out of over 200 cities worldwide in Mercer's 2019 ‘Quality of Living Survey’. In the pan-European 'International Student Barometer', 96% of students polled felt safe and secure, and 97% said Amsterdam was 'the place to be'.

International students can study at the Amsterdam Law School as an exchange student if:

• their home university has an exchange agreement with the Amsterdam Law School (for example as part of the Erasmus programme, but there also many partner universities outside Europe).
• their home university has an exchange agreement with the University of Amsterdam as part of the Global Exchange Programme.
• they come as independent fee-paying student (‘free mover’).

Start and duration

Students can study in the Exchange Programme in Law for a period of one semester. The 20 week semesters start in September and in February.

Transcript

All students in the Exchange Programme in Law receive a transcript stating the courses they have successfully completed and the credits and grades obtained for these courses.
