Journalism, media and globalisation

Catarina Gomes and Hannah Wallace Bowman (Graduates 2012-2014)

Catarina Gomes and Hannah Wallace Bowman are both alumni of the Erasmus Mundus Master's in Journalism, Media and Globalisation. They now work together at Radio Netherlands WorldwideI. In this video testimonial, they share their experiences. They explain how the master programme relates to their current job and talk about how the international Erasmus Mundus programme did not necessarily teach them how to be a journalist, but more to approach journalism from a critical perspective.

I arrived at the Graduate School of Communication for the specialism year of my Erasmus Mundus Masters' in Journalism, Media and Globalization, and I found it an excellent choice. Due to the high standards, studying here is demanding and requires hard work, but it is also very rewarding.

Young, passionate and international lecturers

When I started the programme I was looking for a truly international experience, and the GSC fully met my expectations. Guided by young, passionate and international lecturers, we engaged in discussions on topics that ranged from public opinion, to the changes in online journalism and communication at the stage of the European Union.

Informal and involving teaching

My studies here helped me to develop my critical thinking skills and increased my interest for the world of research. The teaching is informal and involving, with a propensity for group work, and the Graduate School provides a solid background on research methods. The facilities of the UvA are great and there are many events and guest lectures going on throughout the academic year. As a journalism student, I also had the opportunity to write articles that were published on the website of the Graduate School. Last but not least, the city of Amsterdam is the perfect environment for student life, and I really enjoyed living and studying here.
