Study programme

The track Science for Energy and Sustainability is an outward-looking programme, geared towards the cutting edge of energy and sustainability research. It gives you the skills and knowledge to move from understanding the state-of-the-art, to actually developing new sustainable technologies that can be implemented in society.

Programme outline

This two-year Master's programme consists of obligatory courses and elective courses, a research project and a literature study. 

Upon entry, you choose whether to pursue a Physics-oriented or Chemistry-oriented version of the track. In your first year you take all your courses. Your whole second year is dedicated to your research project and literature study. It is also possible to follow this programme part-time.

    Besides these core courses, the 30 EC restricted choice courses are required as follow:

    18 EC Chemistry, for example:

    • Electrochemical Processes and Batteries (6 EC)
    • Molecular Modelling for Sustainability (6 EC)

    6 EC Physics, for example:

    • BioSolar Cells (6 EC)
    • Emergent Energy Materials (6 EC)
    • Photosynthesis and Energy (6 EC)
    • Photovoltaics (6 EC)

    6 EC Management/Policy, for example:

    • Management of Sustainable Innovation (6 EC)
    • Open Innovation in Science and Sustainability (6 EC)
    • Energy and Climate Change: Science, Policy and Economics (6 EC)
  • Elective courses

    24 EC can be used to for elective (chemistry) courses and fulfil specific requirements, e.g. for advanced courses.

Research project

The programme's research training takes place in the form of a research project, conducted either within one of the participating research groups, at another university (in the Netherlands or abroad), or in industry. The project includes a written Master's thesis and an oral presentation.

Literature study 

In addition to the research project you also do a literature study on a subject of your own choosing. You will present your results in an oral presentation to the staff of the division or institute and your fellow students. 

Studying part-time

The Chemistry Master can also be done part-time, however there is no separate part-time programme. Part-time in this case means that you do the same programme as the full-time programme, but at your own pace, for example one course per period instead of two. Therefore the schedule for part-time studying is a subset of the full-time schedule, which means that per period you choose which courses to follow, so you can spread out the workload. There are no evening classes and no separate courses for part-time students. You do the exact same programme as the full-time students, at the same moments, only it takes longer.

Pre-Master's programme Chemistry

For students with a Dutch HBO background we offer a special pre-Master's Programme (Schakelprogramma, taught in Dutch). 

Accreditation and title

Science for Energy and Sustainability is a track of the Master's programmes Chemistry and Physics and Astronomy. These programmes have been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme (a total of 120 EC), you will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in either Chemistry or Physics and Astronomy and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
