For me the main reason to choose the Political Communication track was the interesting connection between citizens, politicians and the media, because a good democracy demands an informed public. All the courses are taught in small classes by motivated professors who aren’t afraid to start a discussion in class.

The large amount of international students makes the discussions very interesting, because in this way different cultural perspectives are shared. Furthermore, you will read both classic and contemporary texts about news production, journalism, media, and political systems. Also, you will practice your skills in critically analyzing literature on political journalism.

Using the skills and insights I learned

After graduation I found a job at the Communication department of the University of Amsterdam. Here, I don’t use my knowledge about politics or democracy that much but I do use my skills and insights I gained during writing my thesis and papers. Strategies about sending information in an efficient way and targeting information on a personal level is something I learned in my Communication Science courses. I am responsible for the Roeterseiland Campus newspaper, the website about the reconstruction of the UvA Campuses, several videos and photoshoots. Together with my colleagues I keep students, employees and neighbours of the campuses up to date about the renovation projects of the UvA.
