Scholarships

On this webpage students can find information about scholarships available at the Graduate School of Social Sciences, the University of Amsterdam, and through the Nuffic Grantfinder. Please note that all information on scholarships, including deadlines, is subject to change.

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS)

The University of Amsterdam aims to attract the world's brightest students to its international classrooms. As from September 2007, outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

Country specific scholarships 

The Graduate School of Social Sciences provides 2 possible Orange Tulip Scholarships for successful master applicants through the NESO offices in Indonesia and India. The scholarship equals the tuition fee. Research Master students are exempted from the OTS.

Successful candidates are fully accepted in the master programme of their choice and are expected to comply with the same requirements as set for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship. Candidates apply both directly at the NESO office as well as with the Graduate School of Social Sciences through the online application form below 13 January 2022 23:59 CET the latest.

Please note that the NESO might have a different deadline.

Selection criteria

We have a limited number of scholarships. The best eligible candidates are selected for a scholarship on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field, as evidenced by their academic records and letter of reference;
  • The quality of their letter of motivation.

How to apply?

You can submit your application by completing the following steps:

  1. First, submit your application for the Master programme of your choice. Note that your Master’s application needs to be complete, with all required documents including valid language test scores.
  2. Receive your UvA student number and MyInfo reference number.
  3. Fill out and submit the below-mentioned application form for the Orange Tulip Scholarship. You will need to upload the following documents: 
  • Scan of identity page of passport
  • Letter of motivation
  • Letter of reference
  • Financial plan

Successful candidates are fully accepted in the master programme of their choice, are eligible according to the information provided on the mentioned website and are selected by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and apply using the form below 13 January 2023 23:59 CET the latest. Research Master students are exempted from the OKP.

Other scholarships

Other scholarships, grants or loans may be available to students from particular countries. To see more information about external scholarships, please check the links below or consult the study abroad office in your country of residence.

The GSSS does not offer or administer other scholarships than the ones mentioned here above. There are however many funds and foundations that may be available to our students from particular countries. Students can consult the study abroad office of their home or previous university or the Dutch Embassy in their country of residence.

Deadlines for application for other scholarships

If you wish to apply for a scholarship other than above, please keep in mind the deadlines for application to a programme.

Students who are applying for a scholarship and therefore need early notification of admission, are advised to apply at least 3 months before the desired date of notification, and before applying for the scholarship itself. Please indicate with your application the date by which you need to receive notification. Timely handling will be aimed for but cannot be guaranteed.

Scholarships for Student Representatives - Bestuursbeurzen

GSSS students that are members of a programme committee (opleidingscommissie) or another official student representative body (not including SAP, which has its own arrangements), such as the Facultaire Studentenraad can apply for a bestuursbeurs (scholarship for student representatives).
