Catalan in a European Context

Catalan is a Romance language spoken by millions every day. Would you like to learn this vibrant language and find out about the unique Catalan world and its culture? This minor provides you with a very special opportunity to gain a unique skill.

The University of Amsterdam is the only university in Benelux that teaches Catalan. This minor is particularly interesting for students of Linguistics; European Studies; Language and Communication; Languages in general (particularly Spanish); and also students from other fields of study who want to learn about Catalan language and culture. They will add a valuable extra dimension to their understanding of how languages work, of Romance languages in particular, and enhance their skills for communication.

Study programme

The minor in Catalan in a European Context comprises 30 ECTS and consists of the following courses:

Semester 1

  • Catalan 1a (6 EC)
  • Catalan 1b (6 EC)
  • De wereld in talen (Dutch taught, 6 EC)

Semester 2

  • Catalan 2 (12 EC)

Related Master's programmes

The minor Catalan in a European context may serve as a good preparation for students who want to apply for admission to a Master's programme in European Studies (Identity and Integration or European Policy), Linguistics (Language, Literature and Education) or Literary Studies (Literature, Culture and Society). 

Entry requirements

This minor is open for application to students who have obtained an academic first-year diploma or a positive Binding Study Advice from an academic Bachelor's programme. This entails that you must have obtained at least 48 ECTS in your propaedeutic year.

The minor is also open for application to students from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO) who have completed their propaedeutic year. If you are an HBO student and if you are looking to do a Master's programme at the UvA, please check out our pre-Master's programmes.

You can enrol in this minor after 9 April.

A minor in Humanities

This minor is offered by the Faculty of Humanities. The faculty‚Äôs minors consist of 30 ECTS credits and earn you a second qualification that will be listed on the transcript accompanying your degree certificate. You can find more information on the following website:
