The University of Birmingham, Lund University and the University of Amsterdam have developed a new virtual minor. The programme explores the theme of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
The minor Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a virtual study abroad programme developed by the College for Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, the School of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham, and the Department of Sociology at Lund University. The programme explores the theme of equality, diversity, and inclusion. The virtual programme will work in the same way as study abroad but without the requirement for students to travel. UvA students will have the opportunity to study modules from the University of Birmingham and Lund University.
The modules will be delivered entirely ONLINE, with online lectures and online synchronous seminars that involve students from all three universities. Opportunities for optional travel to the host universities may be available.
Please note that due to the minor starting in 2024-2025, the information in the 2023-2024 Course Catalogue may be outdated. For the most current programme and detailed course descriptions, refer to the 2024-2025 Course Catalogue from June onwards.
This course examines contrasting approaches by European governments, particularly in the Netherlands and Amsterdam, to social issues in urban settings, including controversial topics like paid-for sex and recreational drug use. Through case studies, students analyze policies addressing homelessness, housing shortages, and other contentious matters in Northwest European cities.
This course delves into feminist views on family policy and care relations, particularly focusing on how policy development impacts gender, generation, migration, and class. Through theoretical and empirical readings, students analyze the effects of family policy on care practices in diverse social contexts, with a special emphasis on Nordic welfare states.
This course explores poverty, class, and inequality in social policy and sociology, examining definitions, measurements, and efforts to address related social problems. It challenges assumptions that poverty and class are interchangeable and analyses policies aimed at mitigating poverty's consequences while shaping public attitudes and media narratives.
