The minor Archaeology Today: (Digital) Science in Archaeology offers the opportunity to become acquainted with the role of the archaeologist and of heritage in society with an outlook to the future. Within the minor you can choose for a ‘science’ or a ‘digital’ path.

  • In the Scientific path you can deepen your knowledge in natural science methods in archaeology, as well as your knowledge of forensic science and environment in archaeology and the actual theme of the Anthropocene. 
  • In the Digital path you deepen your knowledge of digital techniques in archaeology. You will acquire relevant skills in working with applications in this field. 

This minor is offered by the Faculty of Humanities. The faculty’s minors consist of 30 ECTS credits and earn you a second qualification that will be listed on the transcript accompanying your degree certificate.

Who is this minor for?

The minor Archaeology Today: (Digital) Science in Archaeology is open to all students, and would combine particularly well with a Bachelor's in History, Heritage Studies, Earth and Economics, Earth Sciences and Archaeology.

Master's programmes

This minor may serve as a good preparation for academic Bachelor’s students who want to apply for admission to a Master's programme in one of the above mentioned fields of study, in particular the Research Master's in Archaeology and Heritage the dual Master's in Heritage and Memory Studies and the one-year Master's in Archaeology.  Always check the entry requirements on the Application and Admission page of the Master’s programme you are interested in.

Entry requirements

This minor is open for application to students who have obtained an academic first-year diploma or a positive Binding Study Advice from an academic Bachelor's programme. 

The minor is also open for application to students from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO) who have completed their propaedeutic year. If you are an HBO student and if you are looking to do a Master's programme at the UvA, please check out our pre-Master's programmes, as completing a minor is not enough to grant you access to Master’s programmes. 

Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology

This minor is offered by the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). VU Amsterdam and UvA work together within ACASA.

Three courses of this minor are offered at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). After admission to this minor, you therefore need to enrol in these specific courses at VU Amsterdam. You can do so via the minor page of VU Amsterdam. You need to obtain a guest registration at VU Amsterdam to register for these courses. For the minor Archaeology Today: (Digital) Science in Archaeology, this concerns the following courses:
