While preparing a BA elective on Romantic poetry, English faculty member Rudolph Glitz came across, and became curious about 'Serenade', an early nineteenth-century poem by Ludwig Rellstab that was set to music by Franz Schubert in 1827. This led to an article for the American German Studies journal Monatshefte, in which Glitz translates this poem into English before highlighting several different interpretations of it, each with its own emotional colouring.
Glitz' article, 'Invoking Unheard Melodies: Rellstab’s Lyrics to Schubert’s “Serenade”' in Monatshefte Vol. 111 no. 4 (1 December 2019) p. 479-490, can be found here.
