On Wednesday, 21 October, second- and third-year BA English students joined the Cameroon-born, Wales-based, Russian-speaking writer Eric Ngalle Charles for a two-hour creative writing workshop (via Zoom).

Students read several of Eric’s own poems as preparation for the workshop, during which Eric – who arrived in Wales as a political refugee – used personal memoir and song as part of the writing prompts for students. These prompts focused on imagining place and on memory, and by the end of the two hours the students had crafted new works of their own. The workshop was generously supported by the British Council and was originally intended to be ETC’s contribution to the European Night of Literature.
