On 7 July Joep Lambalk, Research director of the international vegetable-breeding company Enza Zaden, and Marten Smidt, director of the UvA Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, signed a term sheet, which provides the legal basis for a joint project. The aim of the project is to research natural sources of resistance that can be introduced by breeding into crop plants.

Both parties agreed to jointly invest in the project and appoint a post-doctoral fellow, dr. Nico Tintor, for two years in the Molecular Plant Pathology group of dr. Frank Takken. Researchers from Enza Zaden and the UvA will work closely together on new strategies to confer disease resistance in plants.
