A changing standard employment relationship? The case of internal labour markets in the health sector

Abstract:

The seminar will present work in progress in the field of internal labour markets and low wage employment. In the first part of the presentation, I will overview several theoretical arguments which are derived from a literature overview we are currently composing for the Netherlands Scientific Council to the Government in the Hague. We are developing an argument about the relationship between the change of internal labour markets and labour mobility. (Joint work with Jelle Visser).

In the second part of the meeting, I will provide some counter-arguments about the nature of such changes and developments when discussing the first evidence from six case studies in Dutch hospitals, we are currently conducting for the Russell Sage Foundation in New York. The empirical material will above all deal with the opportunities for low skilled jobs in hospitals, especially when focussing at the target occupations of nursing assistants, house keepers and nutrition assistants. (This is based on joint work with Marieke van Essen, who next Thursday will enjoy her last lunch seminar and working day at AIAS).
