Econometrics concerns us all. This is what the students of the UvA’s Study Association of Actuarial Sciences and Operations Research (VSAE) want to demonstrate during the 12th edition of the Econometric Game. The competition will take place from 12 through 14 April in Amsterdam. During the competition, 125 students from 25 universities will be presented with the challenge of dealing with a social issue using econometrics.
Every year during the Econometric Game, international teams compete with each other and use econometrics to find creative solutions for social issues. In 2009 for example, research in child mortality rates was carried out in cooperation with UNICEF. In 2010 the subject was HIV/AIDS. This year’s subject will be revealed during the official opening on 12 April 2011. Participating universities include the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the Indian Institute of Technology (India) and last year’s winners Monash University (Australia).
Econometric Game Congress
The programme also features the Econometric Game Congress. On Thursday, 14 April, a number of professors and other specialists will present their outlook on the social issue assigned for this year’s competition. Speakers include Prof. Jan Kiviet (UvA) and Prof. David Jaeger (University of Cologne and City University of New York). Directly following the Congress, finalists in the Econometric Game will present their solutions to a jury of experts. Following the jury’s deliberations, the winner of the 2011 Econometric Game will be announced.
