Maarten Pieter Schinkel was awarded the Van der Schroeff Award 2017 during the New Year’s reception. The award is presented annually to the best lecturer at UvA Economics and Business.

(L to R) Dean Han van Dissel, Maarten Pieter Schinkel and Toma Cerniauskaite (Faculty Student Council)

This year’s members of the Van der Schroeff Award jury  were Han van Dissel (Dean), Mark van der Veen, Massimo Giuliodori, Peter van Baalen, and Toma Cerniauskaite (Faculty Student Council). They combined the submitted nominations with the results of the course evaluations to select three outstanding lecturers. The jury gave the following reasons for their selection:

First place: Maarten Pieter Schinkel

“Maarten Pieter taught four different courses this past academic year, some of them together with colleagues. All these courses received high scores. Maarten Pieter also received positive evaluations as a lecturer. However, the chief reason to present him with the Van der Schroeff award is for his efforts in making the new comprehensive ‘Principles of Economics and Business’ course such a success. Also contributing to this success was the content of the series of lectures, the excellent presentation by a number of our own professors and Maarten Pieter himself, and the fantastic locations at Carré and the De La Mar theatre. This course also enhances the positive reputation of our schools.”

Second place: Sebastian Kortmann

Sebastian Kortmann has received outstanding evaluations from his students for years, both for the content of his lectures as well as his teaching style. The following quote illustrates why: “The close collaboration with Vodaphone was especially interesting and gave good insight in how and why certain strategic concepts are used. There was a lot of interaction in the class with the opportunity to discuss current issues or ask experts from the corporate world and professors questions. The assignments were challenging and instructive. It was very useful to understand how the theoretical framework could be implemented in practice.”

Third place: Dirk Veestraeten

Third place goes to a lecturer who could serve as an example for UvA Economics and Business lecturers. Dirk Veestraeten is committed, enthusiastic, knowledgeable about his field, and wants to provide education of the highest quality. His teaching style –  characterised by his enthusiasm, skills, extensive knowledge, and ability to make his lectures and tutorials amusing and entertaining –  is highly appreciated.
