Study Advisers

Personal circumstances

Are you experiencing personal circumstances that are affecting your studies? We can provide you with support in your particular situation, discuss what you need and what kind of arrangements the university can offer you. Read more about the possibilities.

I have an illness

If you are ill or have a chronic condition, then speak with a study adviser. We can discuss how you approach your studies, your study planning and progress. We can also explain the arrangements in place at the university such as extra time during exams, an exemption from the Binding Study Advice, or financial support in the event of study delay. In order to be eligible for these arrangements, it is essential that you inform us of your personal circumstances (illness) as soon as possible, and provide us with an official medical statement documenting your condition.

I have personal issues

Sometimes you have personal issues that make studying difficult (illness, death of a loved one, difficulties at home etc.) You can meet with the study adviser to discuss what you need. Together, we will come up with a plan to deal with these issues. We can explain the arrangements or resources that are available such as extra time during examinations, an exemption from the Binding Study Advice or financial support in the event of study delay. In order to be eligible for these arrangements, it is essential that you inform us of your personal circumstances as soon as possible, and provide us with documentation.

I have a disability

If you are dyslexic or have another type of disability, the university offers several forms of support, such as additional time to sit examinations, an exemption from the Binding Study Advice, or financial support in the event of study delay. Another option is to receive guidance from a study buddy. For more information, visit the student counsellor’s website.

If you would like to request special arrangements for exams (extra time, laptop, etc.), please address to the student counsellors as described in the link below. Do this as early as possible, ideally prior to starting your degree programme.

Special examination arrangements for students with a disability

In order to be eligible for the other arrangements, it is essential that you inform us of your personal circumstances (illness) as soon as possible, and provide us with (medical) documentation of your condition.

I am a student athlete

Are you a student athlete? Check if you are eligible for the UvA Top-class Athletes Scheme. If you are eligible for this scheme, you can meet with us to discuss the best way to combine your studies and sport activities. Together, we can make agreements with your lecturers or adjust your study plan. We can also explain arrangements available at the university such as an exemption from the Binding Study Advice or or financial support in the event of study delay. In order to be eligible for these arrangements, it is essential you regularly contact us each academic year regarding your study progress.

I will be unable to attend a mandatory lecture due to personal circumstances

For courses with mandatory attendance, you are often permitted to miss one or two lectures. The mandatory attendance requirement for each course can be found in the Course Catalogue. If you miss more than the maximum allowable number of lectures due to personal circumstances, it is up to the lecturer to decide whether you may complete the course. It is important that you inform us of your personal circumstances as soon as possible, including (medical) documentation. We will then contact the lecturer to confirm you missed lectures due to personal circumstances.

I will miss an exam due to personal circumstances

If you are unable to sit for an exam, this means you will either have to pass the resit exam or take course again in the new academic year. Unfortunately, examinations cannot be rescheduled and taken at a later point in time.
Once a year an extra examination opportunity is organized for students who cannot graduate because they have not been able to pass the last course of their study programme. If you do not meet the criteria due to personal circumstances, please contact the studyadvisers.
