The Ninth Annual SRS Graduate Student Essay Prize is awarded to the most outstanding unpublished essay or thesis chapter written in English by a graduate student in any social science or humanities discipline on a Romanian subject during the long academic year 2016–17.

European Studies student Dana Muresan has won the Society for Romanian Studies Graduate Student Essay Prize for 2017 for a chapter of her MA thesis entitled 'Constantin Brancusi: the Construction of a National Hero'. Muresan's essay was selected from over twenty submissions from universities in Europe, Asia and North America.

The prize, which carries a cash award of 300USD, will be formally presented at the Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies in Chicago in November.
