Lerarenopleiding (60 EC, in Dutch (level C1)
This programme is designed for students who consider a job in upper-secondary or professional education. Following this programme gives you the opportunity to achieve the qualification to teach senior-secondary pupils (havo and vwo) within two years, in the subjects biology; chemistry; geography; mathematics; or physics.
The first year you will follow the courses (60 EC) of the master’s programme of your choice and in the second year you will take courses at the ILO, part of the Graduate School of Child Development and Education at the UvA. You will graduate as a Master of Science in your own discipline.
Programme
The programme consists of a one-year internship at a school for upper-secondary education (havo, vwo) (30 EC) and lectures at the ILO (30 EC). The first semester aims to introduce the student-teacher to the basics of teaching: theory of education, pedagogical content knowledge, whereas the second semester aims to train the students to become start-competent teachers: design of teaching materials, high-order learning and teaching skills.
Application
The Major Teaching starts twice a year: in September and in February. Because the ILO has to arrange internships you have to apply rather early: before 1 May for the start in September and before 1 November for the start in February.
It is obligatory to have completed at least 48 EC of the master’s programme of your choice at the start of the major. Further details about the application can be found on the website of the ILO under “Inschrijving”
Deficiencies
Depending on your bachelor’s degree, you might be deficient in some subjects. This is often the case for students in Biomedical Sciences or Earth Sciences. Students with a small number of deficiencies within a maximum of 18 EC will be eligible for admission to the Major’s programme. They will take courses on biology or social geography (up to 18 EC) parallel to the Major’s programme. Please contact the major coordinator dr. Erik Joling to discuss the possibilities.
