Did you know that the Dutch throw away three billion disposable coffee cups a year? Producing disposable cups is highly resource-intensive, yet they only last an average of 10 minutes before they are thrown in the trash. That is why the UvA is launching a pilot project with reusable coffee cups this week, in partnership with Mission Reuse.

For the duration of the pilot project, the food court on the Roeterseiland Campus and Café de Krater will both serve drinks in reusable cups offered by Vytal. To use the cups, you must download the app and enter your name and bank account details. When you first use it, the cup will be registered in your name for free. You can return the cup in one of the receptacles dotted around the Roeterseiland Campus. They will then be cleaned for reuse.

You will have 14 days to return your Vytal cup. If you do not return the cup within that time, a sum of €4 will be debited from your bank account.

At the same time, we will be testing different systems – such as cups for which we charge a deposit – at other locations. The outcomes will be key to determining which system of reusable cups and crockery we will be adopting in the future. One reason for adopting such a system is that we want to minimise waste as part of our efforts to become more sustainable. Another reason is that we will have a statutory duty to do so as of 1 January 2024.
