Business Economics

International applicants

Please read all requirements carefully. In the online application you will be asked to upload proof of all mentioned requirements. Please note that some of this information no longer applies to applicants for the September 2020 intake due to the coronavirus situation.

1. Academic Bachelor's degree

Applicants holding an academic Bachelor's or Master's degree in (Business) Economics are eligible to apply to this programme. Students with an academic Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a strong quantitative orientation in another field are also welcome to apply. Students must have proven knowledge of the following topics at an intermediate level:

  • Microeconomics*
  • Econometrics/quantitative research methods
  • Mathematics and Statistics

*Your coursework in Microeconomics must cover market structure (Industrial Organization) and Game Theory.

Neuroeconomics
Applicants with no coursework in Microeconomics or Industrial Organisation but with a strong quantitative background may apply to the track Neuroeconomics if they have proven knowledge in at least one of the following topics:

  • Affective Neuroscience
  • Behavioural Economics
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Game Theory
  • Introductory Psychology

Extra information
A Bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences or a  Fachhochschule (Germany) will not be taken into consideration. Specific entry requirements apply to students with an AfricanChinese. or Indian Bachelor's degree. In the event that your previous education does not fulfill this program’s requirements, you may wish to consider applying for a master-qualifying program at the Cambridge Education Group

2.  English language proficiency

We require evidence of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL IBT: 92, at least 22 on each sub-score (TOEFL institution code: 9011)
  • IELTS Academic: 6.5, at least 6 on each sub-score
  • Cambridge Assessment English:
    • Certificate in Advanced English:  170 Points Overall and in each skill
    • Certificate of Proficiency in English: 170 Points Overall and in each skill

Test scores must also conform to the following guidelines:

  • An official and sufficient English proficiency test score must be received by the application deadline
  • If you do not provide a sufficient English proficiency test score before the application deadline, you must have an English proficiency test scheduled for a date which is before the application deadline
  • Your English proficiency test score may not be more than 2 years old with respect to the start date of your programme. For example, if you're applying for the September 2020 intake we don't accept English proficiency tests taken before September 2018

Be sure to plan your test on time; test dates fill quickly and it can take several weeks for you to receive your results. Applications without a sufficient score or with a test date after the application deadline, will not be accepted.

Exemptions

You have obtained your Bachelor's degree in one of the following countries: The Netherlands, Australia, Canada (with the exception of Quebec), Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America.

3. GRE

All applicants need to take a GRE test before the application deadline in order to be considered for this programme. So please start planning your test date on time. Applicants are expected to achieve a score of 158 for the Quantitative Reasoning section. If you do not achieve the expected score your application will still be considered. However, a minimum score of 155 on the Quantitative Reasoning section is required. Applicants who submit a GRE below this minimum score will not be accepted into this programme. Please note that completion of all sections of the exam is required.

Based on mutual agreements with certain universities, students might be exempted from the GRE requirement. Check the list of universities to see whether this applies to you.

GMAT

In place of a GRE, a GMAT test score may be accepted in the following cases:

  • if you have already obtained a GMAT score
  • if it is difficult to take the GRE test on a short notice in your country

An overall score of 640 and 48 points in the Quantitative Reasoning section is expected from applicants for this programme. If you do not achieve the expected scores your application will still be considered. However, a minimum overall score of 620 with 45 points in the Quantitative Reasoning section is required. Applicants who submit a GMAT below this minimum score will not be accepted into this programme. Please note that completion of all sections of the exam is required.

4.   Motivation and initiative

Applicants are expected to have the intrinsic motivation to test and build upon this knowledge. Coursework is designed in keeping with this expectation and demands significant personal initiative and an active contribution on the part of the student. Applicants are asked to upload a motivation letter in their online application.
