Use of Depot Space project assesses 2600 newspaper titles
23 March 2021
The reduction applies to material that is available at other academic libraries in the Netherlands already. The basic premise is that the UvA collection is part of Collectie Nederland, the (academic) Collection of the Netherlands.
Thus far, 185 newspaper titles have been removed from the UvA collections. Approximately fifty titles are being transferred to other organisations and the remaining titles are being disposed of at the moment. This has freed up around 100 metres of shelf space.
The 2600 remaining newspaper titles are being analysed by the relevant information specialists. After this initial assessment, the Acquisition Task Group of the Allard Pierson Museum will also assess the list, but from a heritage perspective.
Done by summer
This is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of April, and will be followed by a period in which we will check whether there are other organisations interested in the newspaper titles we will be disposing of.
We will start clearing the remaining newspapers in early June, and hope to finish by the end of June. We expect the deselection of the newspaper articles to free up approximately 1500 metres of shelf space.
Use of Depot Space project
The space occupied in the depot by the UvA collections will be reduced by twenty per cent in three years, and we will resolve the backlog in cataloguing archives and newspaper collections. This plan should lead to more efficient use of storage space, which should result in a cost reduction as well as improved service provision.
