Why did you choose this Research Master’s?

From the moment I started studying humanities and social sciences at university, I developed a keen interest in exploring the relationship between the media and culture. The Research Master’s in Media Studies looks at media and cultural phenomena with an interdisciplinary approach, which fits perfectly with my research interest and direction. Also, I was on exchange at the University of Amsterdam during my undergraduate years, therefore I knew I would definitely enjoy the academic atmosphere here in this renowned school.

What do you like about this Master’s?

I really appreciate the flexibility of the programme, especially when it comes to designing a schedule that is tailored to your own interests. Also, I really like the depth of discussion during seminars and other events, which proves to be very inspiring and thought-provoking. Furthermore, this programme provides many opportunities to meet interesting and bright people within the field as well as across different disciplines, which I really enjoy.

How did you design your programme?

During the first year of my programme, I picked the New Media specialisation because I thought it was one of the most interesting and relevant topics within the field of media today. Apart from the core course, I chose optional electives and tutorials based on my interest and background, including topics such as globalisation, digital methods and Asian studies.

Which subjects did you find interesting?

I found a lot of things interesting within the Research Master’s programme. In our core courses, we didn’t just dig into more classical literature, but also discussed trending topics and current social issues in the field of media.

The optional courses tied surprisingly well in to the core courses. In my optional courses about globalisation and Asian studies, I saw how humanities-based theories and ideas could be applied not only in academia, but how they could also impact the world in on a larger scale.

I would also like to give a shout-out to the Research Master’s seminars, in which we had the opportunity to hear stories and lectures from other professors and students about their research projects and the processes behind them. It was particularly interesting to listen to their intellectual thinking, creative processes and struggles as researchers and intellectuals.

What are your plans for the future?

At this stage I am looking into potential PhD opportunities, but the program itself has also taught me that there are many opportunities out there.

Would you recommend this Master’s programme to prospective students?

Definitely! I think this is a great program and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the field of media and communication, especially for those who are interested in media research. This is not only a great program for those who would like to pursue a career in academia, but through interacting and discussing with different people, you also gain inspiration that will prove useful in other careers and in life.
