Computer scientist Cees Snoek will receive from the US government a subsidy of three million dollar for the development of artificial intelligence that can recognize, find and understand activities and objects in video images with high precision and speed.

The subsidy will be used for the purchase of hard ware and the appointment of three PhD students, a postdoc and a software engineer at the Institute for Informatics.

Where current artificial intelligence focuses mainly on recognizing simple actions such as walking, jumping and skateboarding, the Amsterdam researcher hopes to extend the concept of artificial intelligence to the automatic interpretation of complex visual activities, such as a car that overtakes and then turns right, someone who lifts a heavy suitcase from a trunk, or a boy who is cycling and texting on a cell phone at the same time.



In this project the University of Amsterdam works together with researchers from Stanford Research International and the Universities of Michigan and Washington.
