The interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Mental Health is advertising for eight PhD projects. The Centre for Urban Mental Health is a newly formed research priority area funded by the University of Amsterdam. The Centre aims to unravel new pathways to improve Urban Mental Health that takes into account the complexities and dynamics of mental health problems and mental health disorders in an urban environment.
There is much to gain from this area of research, more than 50% of the world population currently lives in urban areas which is set to increase to 66% by 2050. Urban environments can not only be economically attractive and spark creativity, they can also be more challenging and stressful for some. In this new centre we are set to unravel urban mental health using a complexity science approach, which will be the backbone of this centre.
This centre will focus on common mental health conditions (including depression, anxiety, addiction and related problems). It set out to become a state-of-the-art centre of scientific excellence on urban mental health. Moreover, research will include societal stakeholders, and findings are expected to have a connection to policy and practice in order to improve and promote mental health (from mild to moderate to more severe mental health problems and addiction).
The eight PhD projects will be embedded within three faculties, namely the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science together with the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
This will bring unique interdisciplinary research teams, joining forces with multiple stakeholders from the Amsterdam region. The Centre is based at the Institute of Advanced Studies, which is where the Centre will gather weekly to discuss work and where monthly lectures on Urban Mental Health and Complexity Science will be held. The PhD will be based both at the Centre of Urban Mental Health and the involved faculties.
