Help organisations to make strategic and reporting decisions

In order to make the right strategic business decisions, companies need to have all relevant data to their disposal. More importantly even, they need to interpret these data in order to draw conclusions and make critical decisions. The MSc Accountancy and Control helps you become an expert in analysing, interpreting and advising on complex (financial) business issues that are crucial for strategic decision-making. Furthermore, you will learn to prepare, examine and audit financial reports.

The programme

  • Choose your track

Our Master's in Accountancy & Control consists of a general part for all students and a track-specific part where you follow courses related to the specialisation track of your choice. After the joint first period, you can choose the track that suits you best:

    Accountancy track
This track is for you, if you seek a career in a financial function as an auditor, but also as a financial professional in the business world or in not-for-profit organisations. The programme provides you with in-depth knowledge of financial information flows and their role in financial management. You will also learn professional skills, such as public speaking and presenting, and programming in python. This track prepares you for the practical world of business or the public sector after your graduation.

    Control track
This track is concerned with financial information and decision-making in the management of organisations. It provides you with the broad range of skills, the in-depth knowledge and the international expertise that you will need as a controller or financial professional in the business world or the public sector. Learn how to use budgets and performance measures, design procedures and analyse the factors involved in making difficult decisions on corporate financing.

  • International Financial Reporting (5 EC)

The course provides an overview of the major elements of reporting under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The emphasis is on understanding the key accounting concepts within IFRS but also the practice of applying these standards in real-life situations.

  • Incentives & Control (5EC)

With this course you learn how corporations can align the interests of employees with those of their organisation. You examine the challenges of various financial and non-financial measures in incentive systems for employees, and the relationship between control, (operational) risk management and corporate governance.

  • Accountability & Risk Management (5EC)

This course focusses on the roles of internal control and risk management in ensuring organisational accountability, both social and environmental. We consider and critique theories, philosophies and concepts of corporate governance and accountability emanating from a variety of theoretical perspectives and apply these to real-world examples.

  • Data Analytics & Professional Skills (5EC)

Accountants need to be capable of analysing large amounts of financial and non-financial data to address business challenges. This course helps you to develop an analytical mindset and learn how to use tools to analyse both structured and unstructured data. In addition, this course develops your professional skills such as public speaking, presentation skills, and programming with python.

  • Financial Statement Analysis & Valuation (5EC)

This course applies conceptual aspects of financial accounting and reporting to the financial statements of real-world companies. You will learn to analyse financial statements of well-known companies from the perspective of a financial analyst and to use the insights in company valuation analyses.

  • Judgment & Decision Making in Accounting (5EC)

This course provides you with an introduction to the psychology of judgment and decision making. We discuss important behavioral models of human decision making, and contrast these with economically rational models.

  • Thesis (12EC)

The Master’s thesis is your chance to dive deep into a topic that you are enthusiastic about. A professor in your field of choice will supervise and support you in writing your thesis.

  • Honours programme

The Accountancy and Control Honours programme is a challenging addition to your Master’s degree.

Add extra value to your studies

Hybrid Learning Theatre

Online meets offline in our Hybrid Learning Theatre. The future-proof setting is the stage for dynamic interaction and inspirational education. Students watching the lecture online are projected on a large Zoom wall of 5x3 metres. Together with students who are physically present in the theatre and the lecturer there can be energetic interaction in the class room. In class the material is studied actively, for example by having debates, discussions and case assignments.

Interactive Online Learning at UvA Economics and Business

During your Master’s, you will experience an inspiring combination of both offline and online education. Learning through case studies, interactive online debates with your fellow students, and lecturers sharing videos on their YouTube-channels are just a few examples. We work with a blended learning teaching method. By applying this method, you will be able to combine different types of learning into 1 approach. You can enjoy mastering knowledge at your own pace.

Types of education
In this programme, you will find that in your education there’s a balance between innovative teaching methods (e.g. online challenges, game-based learning), and traditional forms such as writing an academic paper or a (web)-lecture supported by PowerPoint slides. You can expect peer-feedback assignments, or video recordings with explanation.

Our Centre for Educational Innovation and our Teaching and Learning Centre are continuously working on improving our teaching methods. We take the interactions between students, teachers, and learning resources into account. In doing so, we hope to offer you the right combination of challenging, effective, and efficient education.

'The programme is organised to our best interest'

Norina Pop: 'The first block provides an insight to the far extremes of accountancy and control. This helps you in deciding which track to choose. Also, the deadlines may at times be annoying, but in the end they support us very well to go through the process of writing a thesis.'
