A strong international focus

The Research Master's programme Philosophy familiarises students with one or more sub-areas of philosophy, and offers an excellent opportunity to students who are interested in pursuing a PhD in Philosophy. The programme covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. Both Anglo-Saxon and  European philosophy are studied. Students can choose to specialise in one of the following areas:

  • Philosophical Tradition in Context
  • Critical Cultural Theory
  • Philosophy and Public Affairs
  • Logic and Language

Students acquire the skills to formulate, analyse and discuss philosophical problems, as well as to formulate and present targeted research questions within a broader research plan.

The University of Amsterdam's Philosophy programme (research) is the most extensive of its kind in the Netherlands and has the largest student body. The programme covers a wide range of topics and perspectives, and has a strong international focus. It is also highly regarded in terms of research and teaching quality, and is continuously voted best in the Netherlands in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Student profile

You will be considered for admission to the Research Master’s programme if you have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and can demonstrate the following knowledge, insight and skills:

  • demonstrable academic knowledge in the field of Philosophy: if you do not have a substantial amount of credits or academic knowledge related to this field of study, you will not be admitted;
  • excellent research skills at Bachelor’s level: you are able to conduct research independently (i.e. collecting material, applying theory, and writing a thesis);
  • strong academic interest in the philosophical tradition in the broadest sense and a desire to develop your own specialisation, as convincingly demonstrated in the motivation form in which you explain why you think you can successfully complete this specific programme.

Students are expected to contribute eagerly and critically to the academic environment of the Philosophy department.

Degree certificate

The Research Master's programme Philosophy is an accredited degree programme. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Philosophy and the title Master of Arts (MA).
