  • About me

    Roland Bol holds since 2017 the visiting special chair in Terrestrial Biogeochemistry at the University of Amsterdam Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics. He is interested in the complex biogeochemistry processes that occur at the soil-water-air interface in natural and agricultural ecosystems.

  • Research

    My research is within the context of sustainable use of the natural resources soil, water and atmosphere. The biogeochemistry processes that occur at the soil-water-air interface in natural and agricultural ecosystems are therefore examined. With special focus is how isotope signatures can be used as tracers of carbon, nutrients and sediments in the environment, this at small, medium laboratory and larger scale, complex field experiments. The research is centered around:

    • Organic matter, elemental fluxes and colloidal fluxes in ecosystems on the lysimeter, field and small catchment scale
    • Carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles in forest, agricultural, arid and hyper-arid  ecosystems
    • Stability and mobility of soil organic matter (SOM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in semi-natural and agricultural systems.
    • Emissions of CO2 and non-CO2 greenhouse gases (e.g., nitrous oxide and methane) from terrestrial ecosystems under different land use systems
