Chiara Cartuccia is an art historian, writer and curator based in London. She studied Art History at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’ and Freie Universität Berlin. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Art Theory from Goldsmiths College, University of London, with a dissertation discussing the construction of artistic subjectivity in late 70s West-Berlin. From 2012 to 2015, Chiara has been Head of Performance Art Department and Curator at the independent art institution SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin. Since 2014, she is co-founding director of the editorial and curatorial project EX NUNC, and in 2017 she joined the curatorial team of Manifesta12.

Chiara is currently a PhD candidate at ASCA, her research focuses on contemporary performance-based art practices in relation to theory and methodologies of  historiography. She is investigating into the possibility of a gestural understanding of past(s): can performative endeavours help overcoming the centrality of archives, written word and material culture as only instruments in the codification and transmission of History as well as of  (private and/or collective) narratives of the past?

The research adopts the work of contemporary performance artists as specific research cases, paying particular attention to the post- and de-colonial discourses developed by artists beyond the West.
