  • Research Interests and Background

I am a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and a PhD-candidate in the Department of Anthropology at University College London (UCL). I teach a variety of courses in the bachelor and master programme and currently supervise several MA-students.

My research focusses on the ways ideas and imaginations of the future become evident in daily life. I'm interested in understanding how the uncertainty of the future is experienced and how people decide to act (or not act) to change the situation they find themselves in. During my MA at the University of Amsterdam, I looked at the role of hope and trust in the coping narratives of advanced-stage cancer patients in the Netherlands. This research led to several publications in international journals, and an in-depth literature review on the conceptualisation and use of hope within health-settings.

For my current PhD research I conducted fieldwork in Lesvos, Greece in 2017 and 2018 with asylum seekers who arrived in Greece after the implementation of the EU-Turkey Statement. In this research project, I seek to understand how asylum seekers engage in future-making. I ask how their notions of the future are shaped and re-shaped while going through various regimes of aid and asylum, and the impact this has on their imagined migration trajectories. This PhD-project will be concluded in spring 2021.
