Rutger Helmers (1980) is universitair docent bij de capaciteitsgroep Muziekwetenschap, gespecialiseerd in negentiende-eeuwse muziekgeschiedenis, Russische muziek, opera en nationalisme. Hij is in 2012 aan de Universiteit Utrecht gepromoveerd bij Emile Wennekes en Marina Frolova-Walker (Clare College, Cambridge); sindsdien is hij behalve aan de UvA als docent verbonden geweest aan de opleiding Muziekwetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht en Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. He is sinds 2015 actief als redacteur van het tijdschrift De Moderne Tijd. De Lage Landen, 1780-1940, en is van 2016 to 2019 bestuurlid geweest bij de Koninklijke Vereniging voor Nederlandse Muziekgeschiedenis (KVNM). Zijn huidige onderzoek richt zich onder meer op het reizen van negentiende-eeuwse musici, en representaties van Oekraïne in de muziek van het negentiende-eeuwse Russische Keizerrijk. In het kader van het laatste onderzoek zal hij in 2021/22 als gastonderzoeker (HURI Research Fellow) verbonden zijn aan het Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.
