    Kristina Iron is universitair docent aan het Instituut voor Informatirecht (IViR) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zij is directeur van de jaarlijkse IViR Summer Course on Privacy Law and Policy, en coördinator van en docent binnen de onderzoeksmaster Informatierecht. Daarnaast is Kristina thans ook non-resident fellow aan het Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) van de Central European University in Boedapest (Hongarije), waar zij voorheen werkzaam was als Associate Professor aan de School of Public Policy. Verder is Kristina lid van het wetenschappelijk comité van het jaarlijkse Computer Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) conferentie en lid van de internationale adviesraad van het Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC).

    Een belangrijk thema in Kristina haar onderzoek is de interpretatie en analyse van de transformerende processen die de juridische kenmerken van digitale data herconfigureren in overeenstemming met maatschappelijke behoeften. Zo heeft Kristina in het verleden gerapporteerd over belangrijke ontwikkelingen in het gegevensbeschermingsrecht van de Europese Unie en de toenemende constitutionalisering van dat recht, en over de wijze waarop het Europees recht raakt aan een mondiaal digitaal ecosysteem. Daarnaast heeft Kristina als Marie Curie fellow op het onderzoeksproject Governing Digital Information een exploratief onderzoek verricht naar de gevolgen van cloud computing op de digitale bestanden van consumenten. In het bijzonder richt haar huidige onderzoeksagenda zich op de governance  van transnationale digitale technologieën en de mondiale data-waardeketen bezien vanuit het Europees recht en het internationaal economisch recht.

    In termen van maatschappelijke relevantie heeft een groot deel van de contractonderzoeken, die Kristina heeft geleid of waaraan zij heeft deelgenomen, een significante impact gehad op overheidsbeleid. Zo heeft het in opdracht van de Europese Commissie uitgevoerde INDIREG-onderzoek bijgedragen aan concrete beleidsverschuivingen  met betrekking tot de Richtlijn Audiovisuele Mediadiensten. Daarnaast heeft het onderzoek “Trade and Privacy: Complicated Bedfellows?” een positief effect gehad op de bescherming van privacy in het kader van het externe handelsbeleid van de Europese Unie. Onlangs heeft Kristina in opdracht van de Nederlandse overheid een vooruitstrevend onderzoek naar “Artificial Intelligence and EU Trade Policy” verricht. Tot slot brengt Kristina zeer regelmatig advies uit aan de Europese Commissie, het Europees Parlement, de European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), de Raad van Europa, de Organisatie voor Economische Samenwerking en Ontwikkeling (OESO), nationale overheden en maatschappelijke organisaties.

    Kristina behaalde haar doctoraat (Dr. iuris) aan de Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Duitsland) en haar master in Information Technology and Telecommunications Law (LL.M.) aan de University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (VK). In het verleden was Kristina medewerker bij de Autoriteit Bescherming Persoonsgegevens in Berlijn (Duitsland), Senior Regulatory Counsel voor een Duitse mobiele netwerkbeheerder (Duitsland), trainee bij de Europese Commissie in Brussel (België) en Visiting Fellow bij het Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) in Washington D.C. (VS).
