I am most interested in the production and processing of non-literal language, in particular irony.

As a PhD candidate with the ACLC in the Faculty of Humanities at the UvA, I am working with Gerard Steen, Christian Burgers, Tom Lentz, and Jakub Szymanik on an interdisciplinary research project on the prosodic characteristics of ironic speech in the context of political satire, funded by an IDA grant. Research on ironic language is a relevant topic in a number of research fields, including cognitive science, linguistics, communication science, and automated sentiment analysis. Our project connects theoretical and methodological approaches from these different fields to achieve a multifaceted view on how ironic intent and meaning is marked in political satire and what communicative effects it can have. We aim to develop a systematic classification of prosodic irony markers, and research how they may be utilized to communicate different types of satirical irony.
