I am a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) working in social philosophy and critical theory. My project is called Post-rationalisation: Openness in Contemporary Social Organisation and is supervised by René Boomkens and Robin Celikates. In this project, I am looking at two seemingly contradictory narratives of modernisation, namely the kind of narrative that views modernisation as guided by a logic of socio-cultural closure (e.g., Weber’s ‘iron cage’) and the kind that views it as governed by a logic of openness (e.g. Bauman’s liquid modernity or Deleuze and Guattari’s capitalist deterritorialisation). I analyse these heterogeneous logics in terms of a paradox of openness and closure, which I take from Niklas Luhmann's social systems theory. This yields a theory of contemporary rationalisation as working through both closure and openness.
