What is the difference between Actuarial Science and Econometrics?
In both Actuarial Science and Econometrics mathematics, statistics, and economics have focus. Actuarial Science is more about understanding and managing financial risks, especially in insurance and finance. Econometrics is concerned with analysing and making sense of economic relationships from a broader perspective. Goal is to help organisations in making better business and policy decisions.

Do you need programming skills before you start with Actuarial Science or Econometrics?
You don't need any programming skills before you start Actuarial Science or Econometrics. You will learn everything you need to know in terms of programming during the Bachelor's.

Do you need to excel in mathematics before you start with Actuarial Science or Econometrics?
Both Bachelor’s programmes are very focused on mathematics. Therefore it is an advantage if mathematics is one of your favourite subjects and you excel in it. If you want to know which level of math is required, please take a look at the entry requirements.

What are the career prospects?
The career prospects for both actuaries and econometricians are very good. They are both in high demand. If you want to become a fully qualified recognised actuary or econometrician, you can specialise with a Master’s degree in Actuarial science and Mathematical Finance or Econometrics.

The Bachelor’s in Actuarial Science and Econometrics are also offered in Dutch. Is there any difference in the English and Dutch taught programmes?
No, there are no differences.

Can you switch between Actuarial Science and Econometrics after the first 2 years?
The first 2 years of the programmes are identical. Therefore, you can switch after 2 years you if chose Actuarial Science, but you decide you would rather continue with Econometrics (or the other way around).

Does the UvA organise networking events?
The VSAE (study association for all students of Actuarial Science and Econometrics) organises many study-related events and projects. Throughout the year they organise multiple career events in which you can have personal conversations with recruiters and participate in workshops.
