Research and obtaining a doctorate

After completing your Master's you may want to pursue an academic career at the University and obtain a doctorate. In that case you will need to apply for a PhD position. This involves writing a doctoral thesis and teaching at the University over a period of three or four years.

The UvA's research institute for communication science is The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). ASCoR is the largest institute for communication science research in Europe and one of the largest in the world. ASCoR researchers carry out studies into a wide range of subjects, including the following:

  • fear in children as a consequence of seeing intrusive news items
  • the impact of news coverage on the perception of current political issues
  • the relation between media content and discrimination in the sports world
  • the effect of risk communication on healthy and unhealthy behaviour
  • the appeal of video games

Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Commerciële Communicatie

Besides ASCoR, a number of other research institutes and foundations are also connected to the department of Communication Science. One of these is the Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Commerciële Communicatie ( Institute for Research on Commercial Communication), which specialises in research into advertising.
