AUV Alumnus Prize

Each year, the Amsterdam University Association (AUV) awards the Alumnus Prize to young UvA alumni who achieved extraordinary things after they graduated from the University of Amsterdam. The third prize in the AUV Alumnus Prize 2016 competition was won by Political Science alumnus Jacob Schaap, who graduated in 2015.

Schaap initiated a project called Boxing: A game of life, a sports programme for Syrian refugees staying in refugee camps in Beirut and Lebanon. Over half of the registered refugees are children, so the project especially focuses on this group. Women are offered self-defence courses in these refugee camps. The women and children therefore increase their ability to defend themselves mentally and physically, while also offering a distraction from daily life and the stressful environment. As a result, these refugees will be better able to assert and maintain themselves in the countries in which they end up.

Thesis Prize Royal Dutch Water Network (KNW)

On November 25 2017 political science student Lieke Bracker has received the 1000 Euro thesis prize 2017 of the Royal Dutch Water Network (KNW) for her bachelor thesis. The jury was very impressed of the thesis entitled ‘Political dimensions of transitions: discussions about sewer taxes as a policy instrument for the climate neutral city. The thesis analyzes a very relevant, vibrant and topical policy issue and combines solid field research into efforts to implement this taxation.

Brackel wrote her a thesis in the context of the Bachelor thesis project Governance of Natural Resources. This project was introduced in the study year 2016-2017 as a part of a set of educational renewals in the BSc in political science  that aim to strengthen students’ orientation on the labor market and provide students an opportunity to further develop their professional skills and knowledge of practice.
