What does the study programme look like?
This two-year Master's programme consists 5 distinct tracks:
- Big Data Engineering
- Foundations of Computing and Concurrency
- Internet and Web Technology
- Parallel Computing Systems
- Software Engineering and Green IT
Each track comprises five mandatory core courses – relating to Computer Science in general and your track specifically – plus certain restricted choices and electives. You’ll also carry out your Master’s project and write your thesis in the second half of your second year.
The curriculum in this Master’s programme mainly takes place at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

What is a joint degree?
The University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have joined forces in the Computer Science Master’s programme. As a student you will benefit from expertise, networks and research projects at both universities and affiliated research institutes. Upon completion of the programme you will receive a joint degree certificate.

What are the entry requirements for this Master’s programme?
The entry requirements and the application procedure for this Master’s programme depend on whether you have completed your prior education in the Netherlands or abroad.

I don’t meet the entry requirements. Can I do a pre-Master’s programme?
If you have a Bachelor’s degree from a Dutch university of applied sciences (HBO) you are advised to contact the Master’s coordinator before applying. An individual programme will be designed in consultation with the coordinator.

Can I study this programme in part-time?
The Master's programme Computer Science is a full-time programme and does not offer a part-time programme.

How do I apply for this Master’s programme and when is the deadline?
The application process and the deadline depend on whether you have completed your prior education in the Netherlands or abroad. We strongly recommend to start the application procedure at least a week before the deadline. Getting all your documents ready and going through the process will take several days.
