Who better than our students and staff can give you an insight into the Master’s track European Union Law and studying at the Amsterdam Law School. Read below what they have to say.

Meet our students

Laura Jacobs (Netherlands), Master’s student European Union Law

‘This was the best choice I could possibly have made. I learned a great deal and now have a quite comprehensive understanding of EU Law. I participated in two “experiential” modules, moot court and a law clinic, which helped prepare me for the practical side of EU Law.

Besides being informative, it was also fun; the programme fully met my expectations. The study programme is organized in such a way that, once you have completed the basics, you can customize your Master’s to suit your own interests.’

André Esperança Silva (Portugal), Master’s student European Union Law

From the very beginning, I found my study programme to be the biggest challenge I have faced so far. I knew what I had signed up for and I ultimately envisaged for a strong academic experience that would intensively enhance my professional skills. I found the LLM EU Law programme capable of challenging my competences as a lawyer, giving me a strong insight of the practical exercise within the professional world, real-life advanced issues and the constant push for academic excellence. The UvA staff were able to provide me with materials, practical experiences and content that formed the bridge between my academic preparation and what to expect for future employment.

The study load is intensive, the modules are demanding, and the professors are strict. Nevertheless, it is exactly what a student needs to step up his game.’

Cornelia Linde (Sweden), Master’s student European Union Law

‘This programme gave me a really good foundation in European Union Law and I feel prepared to apply for jobs in the field. The courses were great and the programme also has a practical part with moot courts and negotiations that are a lot of fun!

What surprised me is how much of everything in the countries around Europe actually is determined by EU law. I don’t think people understand that EU law affects your life as much as the national laws. When I realized this, the choice for this Master’s programme felt even more right!’

Meet our staff

Dr. Thomas Vandamme

Academic coordinator European Union Law

‘Yearly, the Master's programme in European Union  Law at the University of Amsterdam attracts around 35-40 students from a variety of different countries. In this international environment, students are offered a broad range of courses dealing with many aspects of EU law and policy. ’The fact that the classes are so international often yields different views and insights on certain legal or political issues apparent from debating certain issues or current developments in the different courses. Many students appreciate the ALP elements (negotiating in a simulation; pleading in a moot court) as it challenges them on a different level altogether (combining knowledge with practical skills).'
