This Master’s programme offers one of the only LLM degrees in Law & Finance in the world.
Our graduates work as:
- Lawyers in the corporate/transactional and financial practices of law firms
- Legal and compliance experts in the financial industry (including banks, insurance companies and pension funds)
- In-house Legal Counsels at multinational corporations and/or international organizations
- Legal and compliance officers for financial supervisory authorities
- Consultants in positions requiring legal and financial knowledge in organizations such as think-tanks and accounting firms
You can also choose to pursue an academic career at the university after completing your Master's degree. As a PhD student, you will conduct research and give lectures.

What will my career prospects be like?
The Master’s in Law & Finance is one of only a handful of degree programmes to address the worldwide demand for financial legal specialists. Graduates of this LLM programme typically find employment as:
- Lawyers in the corporate/transactional and financial practices of law firms
- Legal and compliance experts in the financial industry (including banks, insurance companies, and pension funds)
- Legal Counsel at in-house legal departments of multinational corporations and/or international organisations
- Legal and compliance officers for financial supervisory authorities
- Consultants to organisations including but not limited to think-tanks, accounting firms, and proxy advisors that require legal and financial expertise
- Academic researchers in law and finance.

Can I gain admission to the bar and acquire ‘civiel effect’?
Obtaining ‘civiel effect’ in the Netherlands requires both the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Laws completed at a Dutch university (cf. art. 2 Advocatenwet), as well as meeting the requirements of the "Convenant Civiel Effect" of 2016. Please note that the Bachelor’s in Law, and some Law programmes at the Master's level, are taught solely in Dutch.
If you obtained your Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in law in another European country (EER or Switzerland), you may be eligible for exemption from some courses within the UvA's Bachelor’s in Law.
