Spotlight on a course: Philosophy of Cognition

What is the mind? How are mind and body related? And how should we investigate such questions? In this course we will look into the contemporary philosophy of mind and cognition. The course starts with a general overview of main topics in philosophy of mind and cognition, and their roots in metaphysics, phenomenology and epistemology. We will discuss a range of traditional philosophical problems, such as the mind-body problem, including questions on mental causation; the problem of other minds, including questions on social cognition and the distinction between first and third person experience, including problems of intentionality and consciousness. In each class we will examine contemporary approaches to these problems and discuss the relation to empirical research.
