The Institute for Business and Industrial Statistics of the University of Amsterdam (IBIS UvA) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a symposium on 1 May. Originally the institute was established to facilitate a Statistics programme. Over the years it has developed into an institution that has trained thousands of students and that has facilitated numerous promotions and - award-winning scientific publications.

Lean Six Sigma method

The symposium’s programme was an excellent reflection of the development of IBIS UvA between 1994 and 2019. Over the past 25  years, IBIS UvA has focused primarily on training professionals in the Lean Six Sigma method. Until now, over  5.000 Black Belts and Green Belts have been trained. Besides this, the IBIS UvA staff has 23 promotions, 150 peer-reviewed articles, 9 books and numerous awards and medals to its credit.

Over 60 scientists, experts, former students and visitors celebrated the institute’s birthday. What direction will it take in the future? Interest in industrial statistics keeps increasing. Therefore IBIS will stay focused on this area in the coming years. Lean Six Sigma remains the most important product. But IBIS UvA might also extend its expertise to other areas. Plans to start a study in Business Analytics have already reached an advanced stage.
