'Language Typology and Universals' is the first follow-up of the workshop ‘Americanists in the Netherlands’ and the IVth meeting of the research group ‘Revitalising Older Linguistic Documentation.' Otto Zwartjes is associate professor of Romance languages and cultures. Astrid Alexander-Bakkerus was Visiting Researcher of Romance languages and cultures.

‘Revitalising Older Linguistic Documentation' was held on 12 May 2011 at the University of Amsterdam  (Amsterdam Centre of Language and Communication). Most papers of this special issue are based on texts - colonial and postcolonial -  that have never been published before, including Nootka (Canada, Vancouver Island), Yokuts (USA, California), Xebero (Peru), Rokorona (Bolivia) and several Arawak languages (Bolivia).
