This masterclass was originally scheduled for 29 June-10 July 2020, but has been postponed to 8-19 February 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak. We aim to stick to the same programme, just at a different point in time.

    • Icebreaking workshop.

    Afternoon

    • Workshop on the visual examination on wax-resin lined paintings - Emilie Froment, Ella Hendriks and Esther van Duijn.
    • Lecture on material and technical history on canvas supports for paintings – Ella Hendriks.
    • Lecture on degradation Processes and Phenomena of Canvas Paintings, and Historical Overview of Structural Conservation Treatments – Emilie Froment.
    • Workshop on carrying out wax-resin linings according to historical approaches (preparatory steps) - Michel van de Laar.
  • Tuesday 9 February – The history of wax-resin linings I

    Morning

    • Lecture on wax-resin linings though history: origins, principles and dissemination - Mireille te Marvelde.
    • Lecture on the technical details of the wax-resin lining method with emphasis on the Hopman family’s lining approach and the Rijksmuseum collection - Esther van Duijn.

    Afternoon

    • Workshop on carrying out wax-resin linings according to historical approaches (continuation) - Michel van de Laar.
  • Wednesday 10 February – The history of wax-resin linings II

    Morning

    • Workshop on carrying out wax-resin linings according to historical approaches (finishing up) + discussion session with experts in the field.
    • Lecture on the history of the critique of wax-resin linings - Ysbrand Hummelen.

    Afternoon

    • Peer session with supervision of Ella Hendriks, Esther van Duijn, Ysbrand Hummelen, Michel van de Laar and Emilie Froment.
  • Thursday 11 February – Paintings in Dutch collections I and Conservation Science

    Morning

    • Visit of the Rijksmuseum’s paintings conservation studio and of ‘Operation Night Watch’ - Petria Noble and Esther van Duijn.

    Afternoon

    • Lecture the consequences of wax-resin linings for analytical chemistry of paintings - Klaas Jan van den Berg.
    • Lecture on the on-going analytical research of the Night Watch by Rembrandt - Katrien Keune.
    • Peer session with supervision of Klaas Jan van den Berg, Emilie Froment, Ella Hendriks and Katrien Keune.
  • Friday 12 February – Paintings in Dutch collections II

    Morning

    • Visit of the paintings conservation studio of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem - Mireille te Marvelde and Liesbeth Abraham.

    Afternoon

    • Visit of the paintings conservation studio of the Mauritshuis in The Hague - Sabrina Meloni.

    Evening

    • Screening  of films showing historical restoration treatments, drinks and finger food at Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam.

  • Tuesday 16 February – Color change II

    • Workshop on the influence of the original materials and techniques on color change in ground reconstructions after wax-resin lining (follow up) - Emilie Froment.
    • The workshop is followed by a discussion session.
    • Lecture on color change in ground reconstructions of 17th century canvas paintings after wax-resin lining – Emilie Froment.
    • Lecture on color change in Van Gogh ground reconstructions and consequences for varnish removal – Ella Hendriks.
