UvA students who require financial assistance due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine can turn to an emergency fund for help. The fund consists of a crowdfunding campaign and a substantial contribution from the Amsterdam University Fund (AUF).

The emergency fund is part of a broader package of measures we are taking in response to the unacceptable Russian invasion of Ukraine. Unlike the previously announced temporary emergency loan of 500 euros, 100% of any payment from the fund is a gift. As a result, students do not need to reimburse this sum.

Students from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus

We feel a responsibility towards all our students. In addition to students from Ukraine, students from Russia and Belarus can therefore also apply to the fund. They form part of our academic community and are not held personally responsible for the Russian invasion. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has explicitly asked universities to do this.

How can you submit an application?

If you need a contribution, make an appointment with a student counsellor first. After a discussion, you will decide together what else is required to submit an application.

Applications can be submitted during the 2021-2022 academic year subject to the following conditions:

  • You are enrolled as a student at the UvA.
  • You are of Ukrainian, Russian or Belarusian nationality.
  • Existing regulations do not apply to your situation or do not apply to a sufficient extent.
  • There is a demonstrable acute financial need related to the invasion of Ukraine.

For short or emergency questions, you can call a student counselor from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 10:00 at +31 (0)20 525 1401. Choose 'student counsellors' in the phone menu.

Need urgent financial help? Use the emergency support fund

Students who have been affected by the war in Ukraine can apply for a one-off emergency loan of €500. This can be provided in the short term. This emergency loan is aimed at all students from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus who experience financial hardship due to the war in Ukraine.
