The UvA is the second-highest ranked Dutch university on the list. A total of five Dutch universities feature in the top 100. In addition to the UvA, these are TU Delft, Wageningen University, Leiden University, and the University of Groningen. TU Delft holds the highest position—as it did last year—and has climbed to 50th place overall.
The global top three remains almost unchanged from last year. The University of Oxford is ranked number one, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place. Third place is shared this year by Princeton University and Stanford University; last year, it was Cambridge University that shared the third spot with Princeton.
The rankings are based on 18 performance indicators, divided into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment): 29.5%; Research environment (volume, income, and reputation): 29%; Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence): 30%; International outlook (staff, students, and research): 7.5%; and Industry (income and patents): 4%. The UvA scores highest in the Research quality category.
